Curtis Stromme discovered early on that making acrylic abstract paintings was what truly made him happy. Working on paper instead of canvas, he uses blocks to apply acrylic paint, creating bold, vivid compositions. Some pieces begin with a deep blue background, with other colors gliding across the surface and occasionally colliding with earlier layers. The overlapping paint builds a rich texture, while metallic swirls and lines bring extra energy. He chooses simple chrome frames so they don’t distract from the art, making the pieces feel like they “go on into infinity,” as he puts it.
After serving in the army during the Vietnam War, Curtis earned a B.A. from the University of the Pacific’s Art Department. While he sometimes explored representational art, often inspired by his many trips to Portugal, he eventually found a preference for creating abstract pieces. He also makes art trading cards—small 2.5 x 3.5-inch abstracts that were once painted on card stock but are now done on mat board. Some are mounted on paper and can be easily framed for display.
