Featured Artist of the Month

Mary Sue Palmquist – May 4, 2024

Watercolor artist Mary Sue Palmquist is the featured artist for the month of May at the Sutter Creek Gallery.  She is a versatile impressionist with subject matter that includes historical architecture, wildlife, Americana, people, and sea life.  There is no subject that Mary Sue can’t paint.  She has been described as innovative, multi-talented, and bold.  Mary Sue’s interpretation of light and color brings her work to life.  Her paintings are influenced by training in Japanese brush style and calligraphy.

Mary Sue’s new works include “Sand Harbor”, “Persimmons”, and “Butterfly” that incorporate bold colors that is not typical in most watercolor paintings.  “Americana 1901” brings the viewer to a simpler time.      

Mary Sue is a graduate of Rockford university in Illinois with a degree in fine art.  She credits her artistic development to her study of drawing, printmaking, and graphic arts.  Two additional years of art therapy led to teaching for three  years an after-school program.

Her art mentors include her grandfather, her high school art teacher, Sabina Turner, and many others.  Mary Sue has been a member of the Sutter Creek gallery for many years
