Mary Sue’s journey in art started in college in the Midwest when she enrolled in drawing, printmaking(etching/lithography) and watercolor classes. It soon turned out to be her major and she took more classes at an Arts College in graphic design, learning typography – pre-computer age. In between her career as a manager of an historic theatre, she still took classes in calligraphy and oriental brush painting
to keep her creativity flowing. There was a time when she studied Art Therapy and taught Art in an afterschool program.
After retirement, she joined the Sutter Creek Gallery in 2016 and entered local & regional art shows as well as the County Fair where she won many awards. She describes her impetus for art as expressing a feeling or perception. She enjoys many “styles” of art, trying various techniques and tools to convey what the feeling calls for. Oftentimes the inspiration comes from the enchantment of a jellyfish, a certain light on a flower or the patina of an old antique, a mysterious old building or a black and white photograph. She enjoys making her own sepia-toned ink from walnut hulls and even rusty nails. Her background in calligraphy has been calling her lately and she is looking towards doing more of this modern style of art incorporating it with her painting.
