For the annual Ragtime Festival in Sutter Creek (August 11-13), Sutter Creek Gallery artist, Mary Sue Palmquist, had her “Americana” painting chosen for the theme. The image will appear on the festival poster and on T-shirts during the event.
Mary Sue was inspired by an old black and white photo she saw at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City. She knew right away she had to paint it. Having no information about the photo, she wrote to the museum and was told the story behind the it.
In 1901 a group called the “Tally-Ho Club” rented a stagecoach for an outing to the Carson City Spurs baseball game. Having their instruments in tune, they announced their arrival with a trumpet fanfare. Mary Sue said that she was inspired by their happy faces and, while she was painting this in 2020, imagined what it was like to be an American in 1901. She is delighted that her painting was chosen to commemorate the 2023 Ragtime Festival.
