Richard grew up in Southern California, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2012 he moved with his wife Michelle to Tanzania and then to Botswana (in Southern Africa) before moving home to Amador County in 2019.
While in Africa, Richard served as Chief Operating Officer for Kickstart International, an NGO providing irrigation equipment to small-holder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa, served as the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce, was the Entrepreneur-In-Residence at the Dar Teknohama Business Incubator, and consulted with a number of NGOs and small businesses.
Richard also spent time in Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana photographing wildlife and landscapes. Now in California, he is concentrating on his landscape photography artwork. His entry “Stairs” won the Amador County Blue Ribbon for first place in the landscape category and several other of his submissions also ribboned. His series of Mother Lode Towns includes images of Sutter Creek, Amador City, Volcano and more.
Richard’s first camera was a Rollieflex his dad brought home from Germany. He was shooting 120mm film with a top-down viewfinder and fixed lens while everyone else was using 35mm film in SLRs with variable lenses. 120mm film was more expensive and came only in rolls of 12, while 35mm came in rolls of 24 and 36. All of which meant he had to be a lot more careful composing shots before clicking the shutter. He is also left-handed, so very used to doing things slightly different.
Richard has had a long career as a senior executive for several Fortune 500 companies, and as an entrepreneur and non-profit executive. From 2005-2008 he served as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area. He is a graduate of the Non-Profit Leadership program at Stanford University. He has two adult daughters and two grandchildren.
In addition to photography, Richard is a very capable web designer.
