Welcome Photographer Richard Miles to the Gallery!

Come to the Sutter Creek Gallery on Saturday, March 16, 2024 from 6pm to 8pm and welcome photographer Richard Miles to the Gallery.

Richard has been in love with photography since he was a teenager, taking black and white photos with an old Rollieflex camera his dad brought home from Germany. He grew up on the beaches of Southern California, then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2012 he moved with his wife Michelle to Tanzania and then to Botswana (in Southern Africa) before moving home to Amador County in 2019.

Richard spent time in Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana photographing wildlife and landscapes. Now in California, he is concentrating on his landscape photography artwork. His entry “Stairs” won the Amador County Blue Ribbon for first place in the landscape category and several other of his submissions also ribboned. His series of Mother Lode Towns includes images of Sutter Creek, Amador City, Volcano and more.

“In order to create an image for sale, I need to travel to a location, set up my camera and lens, and wait for the light. Sometimes I can return to the same spot again and again until the light and conditions are what I’m looking for. But that’s only part of the process. After I capture the image on my camera, I can then spend up to 12 hours editing it on my computer in order to bring out the vision I see in my head. This is no different than a painter creating a landscape or still life or portrait. Or a songwriter who hears a melody in their head before writing the notes down on paper. My tools are digital, not physical, but the creative process is the same,” Richard says.

Richard has had a long career as a senior executive for several Fortune 500 companies, and as an entrepreneur and non-profit executive. From 2005-2008 he served as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area. He is a graduate of the Non-Profit Leadership program at Stanford University. He has two adult daughters and two grandchildren.

He says “It brings me such great joy to think of my artwork hanging in other people’s spaces. I love it when I see pictures of my photos on someone’s wall. And I’m totally in it for that feeling.”

The Sutter Creek Gallery is honored to have Richard Miles displaying his award-winning photography with us and we look forward to seeing all of you at his “Welcome to the Gallery” reception March 16, 2024 from 6 to 8.
